Clover Club – New York

Clover Club - New York found at The Pouring Tales 1

Probably one of the oldest contemporary Brooklyn cocktail endeavours, Clover Club opened in 2008 under the reign of Julie Reiner and right opposite of Leyenda in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Some people might know the Clover Club cocktail which dates back to pre prohibition to a Philadelphia Men’s Club called Clover Club.

Cosy interior

The cocktail appears in the 1897 book The Clover Club of Philadelphia and consists of Gin, Lemon Juice, Raspberry Syrup and Egg White and is one of today’s classic. If you walk into Clover Club in Brooklyn, you can certainly feel thrown back in time with its beautiful classic and wooden interior. The room is generous and is divided in two parts, one a bit more laid back with sofas and the other with tables where you can also dine. The food is as good as the cocktails even though we just had a few bar snacks but they were very tasty. The cocktail menu is vast and divided into different cocktail families so you will be sure to find something to your taste. We came rather early but the bar was already well visited. We got lucky and got a seat at the bar where you could see the magic. Female power behind the counter which is a pleasant change in this still very manly world. We selected our cocktails to tunes by Michael Jackson and opted for a Tipu Trader and a Bay Ridge.

Tasty creations

Consisting of Mezcal, Sherry and Cachaça, the Tipu Trader was rather dry but still brought some sweetness with it. Overall full bodied with a healthy smoky note. The Bay Ridge was dry and rather heavy on the spirit. Rye is present and hints of prunes are found in this creation. Rather classic and nothing for the sweet tooth but a well composed recipe. The beautiful interior only gets disturbed by one little thing, the white paper napkins which just kill some of the stylish, well thought through elements like the lighting and furniture. Something that should instantly be changed but all in all I would definitely return back a little later in the evening as the place gets vibrant.
